Virginia Tech - April 16, 2007

In Memory and Personal Thoughts From Netarus on the Virginia Tech Tragedy

April 16, 2007 @ 3 p.m. - The tragedy that has occurred today at Virginia Tech has had a profound affect on many of us within this small company. Several of us are not only graduates of Virginia Tech, but also have family and friends in Blacksburg, Virginia. The following is a personal note on my thoughts on this horrific incident, and I hope that with time our hearts can heal and we can learn from such a tradegy.

My heart sinks thinking about all the students, alumni, faculty, staff, parents, friends and families that are affected by this tragedy. I haven't had a feeling like this since when I was in my senior year at Virginia Tech and 9/11/2001 happened in New York, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania. During 9/11, many felt scared watching that tragic day unfold live on television. No one knew what to do at the time. It seems we have learned a lot since that time. This time - for me - it is a different feeling. A feeling like I've been here before, but this time it hits much closer to home – my college town. This time I know what do to and how to respond...

I will mourn and remember those whose lives were lost on this tragic day. After this day, I will also continue to live my life as everyone should. I don't think anyone should act any differently. Perhaps we may get a little teary eyed thinking about it in the future, but we all have a way to remember. We can always learn from such tragic events and hopefully make our family, communities and society overall stronger. I know I'll keep my head high and will forever be a Hokie.

At this point, I already know through two friends that know at least one of those individuals who were killed. That definitely strikes close to home. West AJ was my dorm my freshman year. Norris was one of the buildings where I went to several engineering classes. We still do not know all of those who were killed, but in time, I'm sure that information will be released. Patience is a virtue.

My prayers go out to the parents who know about their children and who have yet to hear from their loved ones. Things happen in mysterious ways. Evil never seems to make any sense, but the good in all of us will prevail.

So I asked myself, "How can I help?" In an email that I received from the Virginia Tech Alumni association...

Many have asked how they may send financial memorials... any memorial gifts, payable to the "Virginia Tech Foundation," designated specifically for the "Virginia Tech Family Fund," should be mailed to:

University Development
902 Prices Fork Road (0336)
Blacksburg, VA 24061

OR online through the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund at:

Virginia Tech is an awesome university. The closeness between alumni and students is one the strongest that I have ever seen – even before this tragedy. People comment all the time about the kindness of those from Virginia Tech. This event will make us stronger. I am proud to be a Hokie. Go Hokies!

In Loving Memory,
